The passing of years can cause a number of unflattering changes to facial skin. The lines formed by the action of frequent muscle contractions can make individuals look older than their years. Facial fillers have been developed that can be used to plump these deep lines to provide a smoother and younger appearance. These products can be used to treat specific problem areas.
How Fillers Are Used
Facial fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid compounds, collagen or synthetic forms that are injected under the skin to increase the volume of lines. They can be used to smooth lines around the eyes and at the corners of the mouth. Generally, a local anesthetic is also used to prevent discomfort from the procedure, which only takes a few minutes. In some cases, the several treatments are done over a period of weeks. The results are noticeable and generally last from 3 to 13 months, or more.
The use of fillers can cause minor bruising, swelling at the site of injection, but these effects generally dissipate over 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. Allergic reactions to the compounds can occur, but these reactions are extremely rare. Patients can usually return to work or other activities immediately after the procedure.
